Undergoing oral surgery can feel overwhelming, but with the right preparation and knowledge beforehand, you can feel confident and ready to go into the procedure.

Whether it’s implant surgery or a restoration procedure, there are some key steps you can take to ensure you are ready to go.

This article will offer a guide into how to best prepare for dental surgery, along with some expert knowledge and tips to help you feel comfortable and assured both during and throughout the process.Let’s dive in!

Pre-Surgery Preparation

Before your dental implant surgery, your cosmetic dental surgeon will provide you with a list of pre-op instructions that should be followed carefully.

While the following list is not extensive, here are a few key tips to follow:

  1. Avoid eating and drinking beforehand – As with other surgical procedures, it’s important to avoid eating and drinking at least several hours before. Your surgeon will give you a specific time frame, and it’s important to adhere to this as it is a critical part of pre-operative care.
  2. Confirm a safe ride – Because dental implant surgery is done using anesthesia, you will not be able to drive home following the procedure. Make sure to have a safe and reliable mode of transport home, along with someone to care for you for the first 24 hours if possible.
  3. Take prescribed medications – Your surgeon will prescribe any necessary medications to take before surgery. Follow their instructions and take all medications to ensure your healing process goes seamlessly.
  4. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing – While not completely a preventative measure, wearing loose-fitting clothing will help with your overall comfort!

Post-Op Care

As with pre-op, your surgeon will ensure you have all of the necessary instructions for post-op care. Take this time to rest and commit to your recovery – the results will speak for themselves!

  1. Eat soft foods & drink fluids – In the days (or weeks) following your dental implant surgery, avoid hard or crunchy foods that may get stuck in the teeth. Also, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.
  2. Use ice packs – Ice packs on the face are a great way to reduce pain, swelling, and bruising. Use these for the first 48 hours, 20 minutes on – and 10 minutes off.
  3. Take prescribed medications – Along with pre-op medications, your surgeon will also prescribe you post-op medications; usually including an antibiotic and painkiller (if needed). The antibiotics are extremely important to take, whereas you may choose to take OTC Tylenol or Advil for pain management.
  4. REST – Use this time to rest and let your body heal! Avoid strenuous activity for at least 3-4 days after surgery, and then opt for light activity until you’re fully healed.
