Let’s talk veneers.
Veneers have risen to the top in the world of cosmetic dentistry, and for good reason! They provide an opportunity to transform smiles and even change lives.
But are they permanent? And if not, what is the best way to maintain long-lasting results? In this article, we will provide a brief overview of veneers. We’ll talk about the different types of veneers and how to choose, as well as discuss what to expect in terms of the procedure itself and how long they last.
It’s time for Veneers 101!
Veneers 101
A dental veneer procedure involves placing a layer of material over the surface of the teeth to achieve the results of a perfect, white smile.
Veneers are generally made from composite resin or porcelain, with research showing porcelain veneers far outweigh composite both in aesthetics and durability.
Porcelain veneers are less prone to staining and chipping and offer beautiful yet natural-looking results.
Veneer Placement
Veneer placement is generally done with one consultation followed by two separate visits.
Consultation At the consultation appointment, you can expect to view a mockup of your smile to give you a general idea of what you may look like with veneers as well as give you ideas of different shapes/sizes.
Appointment #1 The first appointment involves prepping the teeth. Under local anesthesia and with no pain, small amounts of tooth enamel are removed to ensure the veneers fit. Impressions are then taken so that your custom veneers can be created.
Following this first appointment, you’ll be sent home with temporary veneers to wear in the meantime.
Appointment #2 The second visit is when the magic happens and your new veneers are placed on top of your existing teeth. Using local anesthesia, your doctor will ensure your veneers are a good fit, and then use a cement bonding agent with light activation to secure them to your teeth.
Veneer Longevity
Veneers are considered permanent because results are not reversible, however, they do not generally last a lifetime and will need replacing at some point. By choosing high-quality porcelain material and ensuring you practice good oral hygiene, the life of veneers can be extended for decades.
Here are some general maintenance tips to follow:
- Brush & Floss Regularly
- Avoid Eating Hard or Crunchy Foods
- Avoid Eating/Drinking Teeth-Staining Foods
- Be Mindful of Teeth Grinding
- Maintain Regular Dentist Check-ups
You, the patient, play a large role in how long your veneers last; so by taking great care in maintaining your smile, your results may withstand long periods.
